What happened
USGS and EMSC track global seismicity and GDACS aggregates multi-hazard disaster alerts. Major earthquakes and eruptions disrupt ports, supply chains and semiconductor fabs concentrated in seismically active Taiwan and Japan, and drive large insured losses.
Why it matters
A major geophysical event is a sudden supply-chain and insured-loss shock: it can idle chip fabs and ports, trigger risk-off and a safe-haven bid, and impose catastrophe losses on reinsurers. Exposure concentrates where critical production sits on a fault line.
Exposed assets
| Ticker | Direction | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| SOXX | ▼ | quake risk to Taiwan/Japan fabs threatens chip supply |
| EWT | ▼ | Taiwan equity index is directly exposed |
| RNR | ▼ | reinsurers carry catastrophe losses |
| GLD | ▲ | haven bid on major-disaster risk-off |
